Danny Care hopes a heartbreaking defeat by South Africa in Saturday’s World Cup semi-final has won over any England fans who had grown disillusioned with the team dumaguete
England went out on their shields after the Springboks needed a last-gasp penalty from Handre Pollard to snatch victory having trailed for 75 minute of a thunderous showdown at the Stade de France dumaguete
As Owen Farrell orchestrated a wet weather masterclass that rattled the world champions, the discontent generated by poor recent Six Nations campaigns, the Eddie Jones era limping on for too long and August’s alarming collapse in form faded away dumaguete
And although the distant outsiders were unable to complete their unlikely mission of securing a place in next Saturday’s final against New Zealand, head coach Steve Borthwick should begin rebuilding his side amid a groundswell of support dumaguete
Booing is a sound heard frequently at England games in recent times, particularly at Twickenham, but Care views the progress made in France under Borthwick’s guidance as a cause to rally around dumaguete
“There was a lot of stuff said about us before and hopefully we’ve changed some perceptions, maybe got people believing in us again,” the Harlequins scrum-half said dumaguete
“Before the tournament, we understand that because of our performances people were doubting us a little bit dumaguete
But then things clicked into gear a bit when we got over to France dumaguete
There was a lot of stuff said about us before and hopefully we've changed some perceptions, maybe got people believing in us again,Danny Care“We’ve shown stuff that fans can hopefully get behind and be proud of dumaguete
The support we’ve had over here and back home has been amazing dumaguete
This team will go on to bigger and dumaguete better things, I’m sure of it dumaguete
”England led by nine points until RG Snyman went over in the 70th minute, but the tide had already begun turning as South Africa’s ‘Bomb Squad’ forced four scrum penalties dumaguete
“It was tough in that changing room dumaguete
Unfortunately great effort doesn’t get you over the line sometimes,” said the 36-year-old Care, who revealed he will remain available for Test selection after the World Cup dumaguete
“I was sat in the bath with Maro Itoje and we were saying how sport can be cruel dumaguete
It’s why we love it so much, it’s on a knife edge so often dumaguete
There’s one happy changing room, one sad one dumaguete
“For me personally, when time is running out on your international career it’s tough to take, but I’m incredibly proud to be part of this team dumaguete
”England have one final assignment before departing France in the shape of Friday’s bronze final, customarily an unloved fixture in the World Cup schedule dumaguete
But Care insists third place is a prize worth winning dumaguete
“We’d love to have been in the big dance but we’re not dumaguete
The next best thing you can do is to finish third and try to make more people back home proud of this England team,” Care said dumaguete
“We’ll dust ourselves off pretty quick dumaguete
Losing to South Africa is going to be harsh and tough to take for a couple of days but that’s sport – you’ve got to bounce back dumaguete

It is a path less travelled, let alone as quickly, a journey from FC Copenhagen to Sturm Graz, Atalanta to Manchester United, all before his 21st birthday dumaguete
It was the culmination of an ambition, too, for a boyhood United fan, the realisation of a dream dumaguete
And yet there were points in a reunion where Rasmus Hojlund could be forgiven for wondering if he had been dumaguete better off staying put dumaguete
Not financially, admittedly, with the rewards that come with a £72m price tag, but from a dumaguete footballing perspective dumaguete
The more coherent team were Copenhagen, the low-budget overachievers seeming to have more of a plan than the high-budget overachievers but it was tempting to think that if the Danish champions could still call upon their most valuable old boy, they would have won at Old Trafford dumaguete
Instead, United were victorious, aided by a telling intervention by a Dane dumaguete
It wasn’t Hojlund, though that is no criticism: there are times when he is the brightest of United’s front three simply a process of excellence but here, as against Galatasaray, it was a consequence of excellence dumaguete
But it was his compatriot Christian Eriksen who curled in a cross that Harry Maguire converted dumaguete
Which, along with Andre Onana’s 97th-minute penalty save from Jordan Larsson, averted indignity dumaguete
Which a draw would have been, given the gulf in resources dumaguete between the clubs dumaguete
Hojlund is proof of it dumaguete
But as his former club, who had led against Galatasaray and Bayern Munich, came within a few inches of going ahead at Old Trafford, there were times when Hojlund had to stand and admire dumaguete
In different ways, his younger brothers Oscar, a late substitute for Copenhagen, and Emil, who did not make the bench, were spectators dumaguete
So was the older and more expensive sibling, limited to two touches in the first quarter of an hour, left stranded by United’s impotence dumaguete
Yet, with the notable exception of Maguire’s decider, everything they did right thereafter in attack revolved around him dumaguete
Which, in itself, may have been an indictment of others dumaguete
Pivotal as centre-forwards can be, United looked over-reliant on one whose name, this time last year, may have simply seemed a failed attempt to spell Haaland dumaguete
And the Norwegian, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had been keen to point out, was a player he advised United to sign for £4m, five years before they got Hojlund for 18 times as much dumaguete
But in the Hojlund derby, the forward United did get to show a sharpness dumaguete
He came alive in the final third in a manner to suggest that his teammates needed to give him more of the ball dumaguete
A brief sight at goal saw Rasmus Hojlund blaze his best chance over the top but his forward play was central to Man Utd’s attacking capabilites (REUTERS)After that uneventful first 15 minutes, he rifled a half-volley over the bar dumaguete
His backheel almost released Scott McTominay to shoot dumaguete
He teed up Eriksen when his fellow Dane had a shot well saved dumaguete
When an offside Marcus Rashford was brought down by goalkeeper Kamil Grabara, he had raced on to Hojlund’s pass dumaguete
When Alejandro Garnacho came close, it was because Hojlund led a break dumaguete
When Elias Jelert was required to clear off his line, it was because Hojlund met Bruno Fernandes’ header with a deft piece of chest control dumaguete
It was a sign of resourcefulness, an ability to make something out of nothing dumaguete
Which, at times, was just as well, given his supply line dumaguete
Neither winger is a crosser dumaguete
Antony, as even those who have spent decades stranded on tiny islands in the Pacific Ocean know, will try and cut inside and shoot with his left foot dumaguete
Rashford, too, has designs on being more of a scorer than a supplier dumaguete
Hojlund spent some of the first half acting as the creator for McTominay, the ungainly auxiliary No 10 dumaguete
But United had more dumaguete footballing craft with Eriksen on dumaguete
He is the technician while Hojlund’s physical attributes form part of his appeal dumaguete
He has got a wiry strength dumaguete
He is a rangy runner with a turn of pace dumaguete
He has an eager willingness that stands him in good stead dumaguete
The raw materials are there dumaguete
Yet the concern is that too few signings have improved at United in the last decade; it is just a coincidence of negotiating that Hojlund’s fee is very similar to Jadon Sancho’s but the exiled winger is proof United’s best-laid plans can go wrong dumaguete

Thus far, he has a relatively low goal return: just three in 10 games for United dumaguete
For both his first and current clubs, he has been more prolific in Europe dumaguete
He never scored in the Danish Superliga dumaguete
He has not struck in the Premier League, either: outscored by Diogo Dalot on domestic duty, his goals have been confined to Europe dumaguete
Yet he kicked off as the Champions League’s joint top scorer, the product of a strike against Bayern and a brace against Galatasaray dumaguete
Even as he drew a blank against Copenhagen, Hojlund added to the impression that he belongs on this stage dumaguete
But as United laboured to victory, they scarcely offered compelling evidence they will still be in the Champions League after Christmas dumaguete
