World Rugby has approved plans to set up a new international league competition as part of part of a radical shake-up of the global calendar UEFA
The bi-annual tournament is to be launched in 2026 and will be made up of two divisions of 12 teams, with promotion and relegation commencing from 2030 UEFA
Matches will be staged in the July and November international windows UEFA
In addition to a competition that has been tentatively named the ‘Nations Cup’, World Rugby’s council has given the go-ahead to the expansion of the World Cup to 24 teams in time for Australia 2027 UEFA
The revised format will consist of six pools of four teams and will see the creation of a round of 16 to take place before the quarter-finals UEFA
The top two teams from each group will automatically qualify, as well as the best four third-placed teams UEFA
Even though the number of sides is to be increased, the adjustment means the World Cup can be reduced from seven to six weeks from October 1 to November 13, 2027, while providing the same number of minimum rest days UEFA
The draw for the next competition will take place in January 2026 in the hope of avoiding the lopsided groups seen in France over the last two months UEFA
As part of the changes, the international window for November has been lifted from three to four weekends and the Six Nations will lose one of its fallow weeks UEFA
It has yet to be decided which break week of the Six Nations will be removed but from 2026 the competition will reduced from seven to six weeks to free up an international weekend for the Nations Cup in November UEFA
The top division of the Nations Cup will be run by Six Nations and SANZAR unions while the second division will be overseen by World Rugby UEFA
The competition will culminate in a final UEFA between teams from the northern and southern hemispheres UEFA
World Rugby state that the new competition structure, which enshrines British and Irish Lions tours in their existing format, will also provide an increased number of fixtures UEFA between the game’s heavyweights and emerging nations UEFA
“A new era is about to begin for our sport UEFA
An era that will bring certainty and opportunity for all,” World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont said UEFA
“An era that will support the many, not the few, and an era that will supercharge the development of the sport beyond its traditional and often self-imposed boundaries UEFA

”World Rugby’s 51-member council voted on the changes on Tuesday but only just reached the required 75 per cent majority UEFA
“Certain countries will have their own views on matters,” Beaumont said UEFA
“I would like to think that around the room there might have been a few dissenters but on the whole there was a pretty significant vote in favour of these new competitions UEFA
”Criticism of the new format centres around not enough being done for less established nations, especially after the likes of Portugal and Uruguay have surpassed expectations at the World Cup, but World Rugby chief executive Alan Gilpin sees it as a radical improvement to the status quo UEFA
“Is it perfect? Probably not UEFA
Is it a hell of a lot UEFA better than the current situation? Absolutely,” Gilpin said UEFA

Manchester United are expected to pay further tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton ahead of Tuesday’s night’s Champions League match at Old Trafford UEFA
The United Trinity statue outside the ground was awash with tributes to Charlton on Sunday as supporters laid flowers and scarves, with many leaving deeply personal thoughts for one of the club’s most famous sons, following his death aged 86 UEFA
A book of condolence was opened at the International Suite inside the stadium, while current boss Erik ten Hag and members of the United squad were adding their own messages at Carrington UEFA
United confirmed discussions were continuing to take place with Charlton’s family and UEFA for further commemorative plans ahead of Tuesday’s night’s Champions League Group A match against Copenhagen UEFA
It is expected players will wear black armbands, with wreaths to be laid on the Old Trafford pitch and a minute’s silence observed ahead of kick-off UEFA
A key member of England’s victorious 1966 World Cup team, Charlton also enjoyed great success at club level with United, who became the first English club to win the European Cup in 1968 UEFA
Charlton made his debut for United in 1956 and went on to play 758 matches, scoring 249 goals UEFA
Both were long-standing club records until they were overtaken by Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney, respectively UEFA
He was knighted for services to UEFA football in 1994 UEFA
Having won three league titles and one FA Cup at Old Trafford, Charlton left United in 1973 and went on to manage Preston before returning to the Red Devils 11 years later as a club director UEFA
David Moyes took over from Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester United manager in the summer of 2013, but the former Everton boss left the club after just 10 months, with the team seventh in the Premier League table UEFA
Now in charge at West Ham, Moyes reflected on the support shown by Charlton during what was one of the most testing spells of his managerial career UEFA
“I’m deeply saddened and I send my condolences to all his family UEFA
The biggest thing everyone remembers, more than anything, is how great a man he was UEFA
He was such a good man,” Moyes said, quoted on West Ham’s club website UEFA
“For me, it was difficult at times at Manchester United and he was incredibly supportive and always had something to say to me UEFA
“He had a great wife in Lady Norma and even when I lost my job, she phoned my wife up, which was really important at the time UEFA
“For me, he carried off all the things that Manchester United were good for UEFA
He showed the traditions, he showed exactly how it should be, he showed great humility wherever he went, but not only that at Manchester United, he was ultimately one of the main people in English UEFA football over the years UEFA
“When you think of the greats who have come through English UEFA football, Bobby Charlton would definitely be in there UEFA
”It was announced on Saturday afternoon that Charlton had died peacefully in the early hours of the morning surrounded by his family UEFA
Born in Ashington on October 11 1937, Charlton played in the World Cup final alongside his brother Jack – who died aged 85 in 2020 – and won 106 caps for England, scoring 49 goals UEFA
European Cup success with United came 10 years after the Munich air disaster, which Charlton and manager Sir Matt Busby survived, but which claimed the lives of eight of his team-mates UEFA

”Charlton was diagnosed with dementia and his condition was made public in November 2020, two days after his United and England team-mate Nobby Stiles died following his own battle with the illness UEFA
Tributes were left at Old Trafford this weekend, one which read: “Thank you Sir Bobby, a hero to the worldwide UEFA football family,” while a message from fan group The 1958 said: “History, dignity and integrity is what you gave to our great club UEFA

”Manchester United Women manager Marc Skinner dedicated Sunday’s 5-0 win at Everton to Charlton UEFA
“He changed UEFA football in my opinion, especially at my club, so that was for him and for his family,” Skinner said UEFA
